Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a lawyer to file for divorce in California?

No. California allows you to represent yourself in a divorce, and many uncontested divorces are handled without an attorney. As Registered Legal Document Assistants (LDA #87), we prepare all your forms at your direction — you decide the terms, and we make sure the paperwork is complete and correct for the court.

How much does an uncontested divorce cost with an LDA?

Far less than an attorney, who bills by the hour. We charge a flat document-preparation fee, quoted up front after your free intake — separate from the court's filing fee. You'll know the full price before any work begins.

How long does a divorce take in California?

California has a mandatory six-month waiting period from the date the responding spouse is served before a divorce can be final. Getting the paperwork right the first time avoids rejections that add months — which is exactly what we prepare for you.

Can you help with custody, support, and property division?

Yes. We prepare the child custody, visitation, support, and marital settlement forms that go with a dissolution, at your direction. We can't give legal advice on what to ask for, but we make sure the documents reflect your decisions and meet California's requirements.
